All Sunday evening, Nancy sat listening to Bill Sikes and Fagin discuss their plans. Finally at 11:00, she put on her bonnet and prepared to go out to meet Rose Maylie. "Where is she going at this hour?" Fagin asked Sikes.
"Just to get a breath of fresh air," answered Nancy.
"You're not going anywhere!" shouted Sikes. "Sit down!"
"Let me go!" Nancy screamed. "I just want some air."

"There's enough air in here," cried Sikes as he grabbed her arms, dragged her to a chair, and forced her to sit down. Despite her pleas and cries and struggles, Nancy could not get loose. By the time the clock struck midnight, she had given up hope of getting out.
"The girl has really gone crazy!" said Sikes to Fagin. "Why do you think she was so eager to go out?"
"Women are stubborn," said the old man. "She's harder to train than most of them."

Fagin thought about Nancy all the way home - her temper tantrums, her lack of interest in the gang's activities, and her desires to go out alone so often. It almost seemed like she was tired of living with Sikes. The girl, in fact, may have already found a new boyfriend, even though Sikes had kept her alive as a young child and saved her from a life in the workhouse. If she had a new boyfriend, Fagin wanted to find out who he was. And Noah Claypole was the perfect man to spy on her!
