The Wife of Margayya's elder brother is a minor character in the novel. She has a big family of ten children. Her family lives in one portion of the house which has been halved into two portions between Margayya and his elder brother with a well in the backyard for the common use of the two families. There is a feud between the two families. They do not visit each other.

Margayya's sister-in-law is not well-disposed towards him. She does not join the school-going ceremony of Balu despite her husband's participation in that function. However, she goes to Margayya's wife when the latter is weeping at the news of Balu's death. She stays with her till the return of Margayya from Madras. She feels hurt when arter his return from Madras, Margayya gives a hint to his brother that they should leave his house. She feels piqued at the bluntness shown by Margayya. She regrets that she has, been "baking and cooking for them night and day-five seers of rice gone for these ingrates...." However, her husband corrects her that there has been only one member of Margayya's family and the rest of them have been her own children during these days.
