Poetics: Chapter 20 - Summary

Also Read

Chapter 20 is devoted to the various parts of Diction-the grammatical elements of language. The discussion is very technical. The basis is, naturally enough, Greek grammar, syntax, and usage. Further, this chapter as well as next two, in most parts, have not so much to do with literary criticism, as with grammatical aspects of language. Critics have remarked that these chapters might have been interpolations.

This chapter deals not with the use of words. Rather, with words as such. Thus we get definitions of terms such as the letter, the Syllables, the Conjunctions, the Article, the Noun, the Verb, Case, Speech. The chapter, indeed, has more to do with grammar than with literary criticism.
