Marvell's theme in the poem To His Coy Mistress is traditionally based on the 'Carpe Diem' theme so popular in his time. The central idea of the poem is the deep and sincere, love felt by the poet for his lady love. If the poet and his mistress had enough time then they both would pass their time quite carelessly and they would carry on there affairs of love for almost an infinite time. The poet would quietly wait and allow his love to grow slowly for its acceptance by the lady, who might continue to refuse his love for a very long time. But there is no infinite time and space and the poet feels threatened by the constant and fast flight of time.
Therefore, he reminds his lady of the futility of her virgin honor to keep off from him her body which could be a matter of mere enjoyment for worms after her death. In this condition, the poet urges his belief to come out of her shyness and enjoy the pleasure of life and love, as much as they can. This is the central theme of the poem To His Coy Mistress which reveals the intense feeling of love for both the poet and his beloved.
