      Dora did not mind David's poverty but her father was very upset when he came to know that they were in love. He had come to know of their affair from Miss Murdstone, who had informed him about their love and showed him the letters David had written to her. Mr. Spenlow asked David to keep away from his daughter. This made David very dejected.

      Soon after this warning, David learned about Mr. Spenlow's sudden demise. He had fallen from his coach and died instantly. Dora had gone away to live with her two aunts at Putney. David was unable to meet her, but Miss Mills kept him informed about her.
