Plot-Summary
In this play, the main character, Jamie Tyrone, is not able to go to his mother’s funeral because he has drunk himself into unconsciousness. There is more than alcohol behind his shame. To Jamie, life was only worth living because of his mother, since she has died he is dead. This perhaps would never come to light if it were not for the tenant’s daughter, Josie, who, on an improbable strange night can be for a moment the mother of the boy.
Critical Analysis
The drama has very strong social interest, even in its most personal moments. It arises from O’Neill’s desire to come to terms with the events it describes. It suffers from a certain awkward juxtaposition of serious and comic elements.
