Denise Levertov (1923-1997) was born in Ilford (England) to a Welsh mother and a Russian Jewish father. She served as a civilian nurse in London during the World War II. He moved to US in 1948. Her first volume The Double Image (1946), was written and published in Britain.
After teaching in Vassar College Tufts University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, she became a professor of English in Stanford University in 1982. She moved to Seattle on retirement in 1993. Overland to the Islands (1958) With Eyes at the Back of Our Heads (1959) Collected Earlier Poems-1940-1960 (1979). Her work was influenced by the Black Mountain School and William Carol Williams. Like him, she displayed a preference for spring user of metaphor and allusion and rhythms of speech. As a woman poet, he was committed to the feminist and anti-war activist.
